Cave of Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai

The '''Cave of Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai''' is located in the Druze occupied village of Peki'in, North Israel. It was in this location that [[Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai]] hid with his son [[Rabbi-Elazar-ben-Rabbi-Shimon|Rabbi Elazar]] to escape a death sentence from the ruling Roman government. Upon their arrival, a carob tree miraculously sprouted near the entrance of the cave to provide them food, although a new tree requires decades to produce such crops. On Shabbos the tree would sprout dates in their place. Currently a large ancient carob tree stands right near the cave, most probably the same tree or an offspring of it. A spring of fresh water also started flowing, providing a Mikva and water to drink. During the week they would cover themselves in sand, dressing only for prayers. During their stay in the cave the highest revelations and mysteries of the [[Kabbalah]] were revealed to them. Originally in the cave for 12 years, they were forced to return for another year after their first emergence. Over the years most of the cave became sealed and only the area immediately following the entrance is accessible.
