Parashat Vayakhel

'''Parashat Vayakhel''' is the tenth parsha in the Book of Shemos and most years is read along with [[Parashat Pekudei|Parshas Pikuday]]. It contains 122 pesukim. For the Haftora, the story of Shlomos creation of the Beis Hamikdosh is read.

==Shabbos Warning==
Moshe assembled the Jews on the day after Yom Kippor, following his descent from Har Sinai,<ref>Rashi Shemos 35:1</ref> attaining forgiveness for the sin of the golden calf and instructs them not to desecrate the Shabbos for the construction of the Mishkan.<ref>Rashi Shemos 35:2</ref> On the six week days work can be done but the seventh day should be sanctified. It is to be a day of complete rest, whoever performs work  on this day will be put to death. He specifically points out the transgression of igniting fires on Shabbos.

==Donations==
After departing from Moshe's assembly the Jews start donating all the materials needed for the Ohel Moed, its service and holy garments. Men came with the women and every generous hearted person brought bracelets, earrings, rings, buckles along with all kinds of golden objects. Every man who possessed blue, purple, or crimson wool, linen, goat hair, red dyed ram skins, tachash skins, silver, copper, Shitim wood, spices and oil, brought them. Every wise hearted woman spun with her hands and brought spun blue, purple and crimson wool, and linen. Women whose hearts uplifted them with wisdom, spun the goat hair while still on the backs of the goats, requiring great skill.<ref>Rashi Shemos 35:26</ref>. 

The Nessim had refrained from donating anything to the Mishkan, thinking that when everyone in the Nation would finish giving they would supply whatever else remained. When the Jews donated all that was needed, the Nessim were left with nothing to bring so they brought the shoham stones and gemstones for the ephod and for the choshen. Since they were lazy a letter is missing from their name here, (וְהַנְשִׂיאִם is written instead of וְהַנְשִׂיאִים with additional “yud”). When it came time for the dedication of the alter they brought sacrifices first to make up for this.<ref>Rashi Shemos 35:27</ref>

==Betzalel and Oholiav==
Moshe tells the Jews how Hashem had selected  Betzalel, the son of Uri, the son of Chur, the son of Miriam<ref>Rashi SHemos 3:30</ref> and Kalev from the tribe of Yehuda, calling him by name and imbued him with the spirit of Hashem, wisdom, insight, knowledge, and talent for all types of craftsmanship. As well as to  do master weaving, work with gold, silver and copper, cutting of stones for setting, woodworking, and ability to work with all types of thoughtful work.

Oholiav the son of Achisamach from the tribe of Dun was appointed to assist Betzalel. Although the tribe of Dan was from the lowest of the tribes which originated from the handmaiden Bilah, Hashem equated Oholiav in the building of the Mishkan to Betzalel who was from Yehuda, the greatest of the tribes.<ref>Rashi SHemos 3:34</ref> Hashem put in their hearts the ability to teach. Hashem imbued them with wisdom of the heart to do all sorts of work of craftsmen, master workers and embroiderers of blue, purple, and crimson wool and linen and weavers. 

The wise men agree to assist. Bitzalel and Ahaliav are granted profound wisdom. Bitzalel proceeds to train others in the job necessary for the building of Mishkan.

==Construction of Mishkan==
The wise men collect the donated materials, which continue to pour in even when no more is needed. Moshe announces an end to the collection and the wise men begin their work.
