In the 1800's this custom came under controversy for transgressing the prohibition of 'Bal Tashchis' needless wasting of useful objects. [[Rabbi Shmuel Heller]] authored an entire book called 'Kavod Milachim' defending this custom. He brought testimony from the Sephardic Elders of [[Safed\|Tzfat]] who witnessed Rabbi Chaim ben Atar (the Ohr Hachaim) himself burn valuable garments in honor of Rabbi Shimon in Meron on Lag Baomer.
