Before his passing Rabbi Yochanan ben Zakkai told his students that he was worried as there were two paths before him, one to Gan Eden and one to Gehinum and he was unsure where he would be led. Big Tzadikim after their passing are often led through Gehinum, so on their way they can raise fallen souls and can continue to serve Hashem even after their passing.
