Rabbi Yehuda bar Ilai was a fourth generation Tana and is the most frequently mentioned Sage in the Mishnah. A student of Rebbe Akiva, he was also one of the five student ordained by Rebbe Yehuda ben Baba as he sacrificed his life. Rebbe Yehudah bar Ilai lived a most of his life in complete poverty. As a result of the same incident that sent Rebbe Shimon bar Yochi into hiding, Rabbi Yehuda was appointed by the Romans as the initiating speaker at all Rabbinic gatherings, for having praised them.

Early Life
Rabbi Yehuda was born in the city of Usha to the Tana Rabbi Ilai whose family originated in Bavel.

Teachers
Rabbi Yehuda bar Ilai's main teachers were Rabbi Akiva and Rabbi Tarfon. In his youth he studied under his father who passed down to him the Torah of his master Rebbe Eliezer ben Hurkanes. Rabbi Yehuda also studied somewhat under all the Sages of Yavneh including; Rebbe Eliezer ben Hurkanes, Rabbi Elazar ben Azariah, Rabban Gamliel, Rabbi Yehoshua ben Chananya, Rabbi Yossi Haglili, Rabbi Yishmoel and Abba Tzydon, later passing down some of their teachings.

Rabbi Tarfon
Rabbi Yehuda was a student of Rabbi Tarfon since his youth and served him for a few years. There are a number of stories in the Talmud about their relationship. Rabbi Tarfon liked his student even calling him at some points 'my son' and presenting him a stick that he used as a Cohen in the purification ritual of three leapers.

Once Yehuda bar Nechenia triumphed over Rabbi Tarfon as he delivered his discourse and his face glowed with pride. Rabbi Akiva who saw this lack of respect for the great elder Rabbi Tarfon, exclaimed his doubts about Yehuda bar Nechenia living much longer. Rabbi Yehuda bar Ilai who witnessed this event came back a few months later during Shevuot and inquired about Yehuda bar Nechenia to find out the outcome of this incident, and sure enough he had died.

Rabbi Akiva
After the passing of his 24,000 students, Rabbi Akiva gathered Rabbi Meir, Rabbi Yehuda, Rabbi Shimon, Rabbi Yossi and Rabbi Elazer ben Shmua who were spreading Torah in Sothern Israel as the time. He then placed all his energy to transmit his Torah to these 5 Sages.

Rabbi Yehuda ben Bava
Gathering of Usha
After the death of Hadrian and the easing of the Roman decrees the leading Sages of Israel gathered in Usha to reconvene. Extra honor was given to Rabbi Yehuda bar Ilai since he was native resident of the city.

Tana
Rabbi Yehuda bar Ilai is the most commonly mentioned Tana in the Mishna where he is called 'Rebbe Yehuda'.

Kever Rabbi Yehuda bar Ilai
Rabbi Yehuda bar Ilai is buried in a cave located in Ein Zeitim, Northern Israel. Above the cave a Beis Medrash was built, which contains stairs leading down to the cave. Rabbi Yehuda bar Ilai is buried on the left side of the cave and his students or family are buried on the right side. A separate women's section contains a Tzion which was the outside of the original structure built over the cave.

Burial of Jewish Human Soap
After the Holocaust, part of the human soap created from the body fat of Jews by the accursed Nazis was recovered and was brought to burial inside the cave.

Hillulah of Rabbi Yehuda bar Ilai
The Yortzite of Rebbe Yehuda bar Illai is celebrated on the 14th of Iyyar, Pesach Shani. Although the exact date of the hillula is unknown, this date was chosen due to its proximity to Lag Baomer when many pilgrims traveled up North each year for the Hillula of the Rashbi. This is the same date chosen for the Hillula of the Tana Rebbe Meir.

Moshe Castel, a native of Jerusalem, was one of Israel’s best known abstract artists. He was the founder of the ‘New Horizons’ group of artists, and his murals decorate important Israeli public buildings. His work can be seen online, in galleries around the world and at the Moshe Castel Museum in Ma’aleh Adumim.

Background
Moshe Elazar Castel was born in 1909 in Jerusalem to a religious Sephardi family whose roots in Israel go back over 400 years to the Spanish expulsion. His father, Rabbi Yehuda Castel' worked as a scribe and designed creative Torah scroll covers and curtains for synagogue Holy Arks.

The young Castel wanted to study art and went to the Bezelel Art School in 1921 where he learned for three years. Moshe proved to be a talented artist and his work was first displayed at an Israeli Artists’ group exhibition at the Tower of David in Jerusalem.

Paris
Moshe Castel then furthered his art education in Paris and as part of his training spent time copying the great masters in the Louvre. During the day he worked to support himself and at night painted in the studio he shared with the sculptor Giacometti. When Castel held his first solo exhibition in May 1927, Jabotinsky, who admired the young painter, wrote an introduction in the catalogue. As Castel’s reputation increased he was taken on by the Galerie Jacques, who made an agreement to buy all his paintings for three years. Moshe Castel continued to exhibit in Paris as well as London, Warsaw and Haifa. By 1936 Castel was in a position to organize a show in Tel Aviv for other artists, like Chagall, also working in Paris.

Israel
With the outbreak of WW2, Moshe Castel returned to Israel and moved to Safed (Tzfat) joining other artists already working there. Despite the war, Castel was able still able to exhibit, having a one-man show in Tel Aviv in 1942, and another in 1946. In 1948, due to artistic differences, Castel led a break-away from the ‘Israeli Artists’ Union’ and formed his own group called ‘New Horizons’. This group had more of universal outlook towards art, and looked towards the abstract European artists like Picasso for inspiration. Moshe Castel continued to live and work in Israel, but from 1959 onwards he spent several months a year working in his Paris studio. He exhibited frequently, both in solo shows and in joint exhibitions internationally representing the best of Israeli art.

Style
Castel’s connection to the land was very strong and on his return to Israel, Castel started to use basalt, a black indigenous rock, in his paintings. Using strong colors like red, green and black in his abstract work, he would add basalt in relief to give the appearance of an ancient script. He painted several murals for public spaces using this method. Moshe Castel felt deeply about his native city and many of his most famous works reflect his love for Jerusalem and can be found there. His ‘Song of Praise to Jerusalem’ decorates the Israeli Parliament (the Knesset), while ‘Wall of Praise to Jerusalem’ is one of two of his works in the Presidential Mansion. The National Convention Centre has a glass mural of his, and he also created pieces for the Weitzman Institute in Rechovot. Castel’s work can also be found in other prestigious locations in Israel like the Diamond Center in Ramat Gan. He is well represented in galleries abroad, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Tate Gallery in London.

Legacy
During his lifetime Moshe Castel was honored with several retrospectives, including one in 1984 held at the Knesset. A book of his etchings and lithographs was published in 1988. In 2010, on what would’ve been his hundredth birthday the Moshe Castel Museum was opened in Ma’aleh Adumim.

Victor Halvani is one of Tzfat’s best-known sculptors. He has been working and exhibiting in the city since 1982.

Background
Victor Halvani was born in Egypt and studied art at the Zamalek Academy of Art in Cairo. Following the threats to the Egyptian Jewish community after Israel declared its independence Halvani moved to Israel and studied at the Bezalel Academy of Art in Jerusalem. He taught art in the Israeli school system as well as the Art Teacher’s College and the Tel Aviv and Haifa University Schools of Occupational Therapy. Halvani studied for a graduate degree in sculpture at the Hammersmith College of Art in London under a scholarship from the Israeli Ministry of Education. In 1975 he moved to the Ein Hod Artists Village to create his sculptures where he served as the dean of the Ein Hod School of Fine Art. Halvani moved to Tzfat in 1982, establishing his gallery and becoming involved in the artists community of the city.

Inspiration
Halvani’s work is influenced by Egyptian art as well as his knowledge of Jewish traditions and his studies of the Bible. His sculpture style has influenced many younger Israeli sculptors with its clean and precise lines, graceful movements and clear meanings. Halvani creates both small and large pieces and many of his sculptures are exhibited in outdoor gardens and public areas while others sit on table tops and shelves. Halvani works in bronze and stainless steel.

Subjects
Halvani covers a wide range of subjects in his sculptures. Many of his works are influenced by Biblical stories such as his “David Playing Harp,”The Binding of Isaac”, “Lot’s Wife”, “Moses and the Princess of Egypt”, “Jacob’s Dream”,”Joshua With the Shofar”, and “Ruth and Naomi”. He has sculpted several versions of “Adam and Eve”, one of which graces the courtyard of Tzfat’s General Exhibition. His works also explore other universal themes such as “Hope,” “Motherhood”, “Maternity,” “Freedom”, and “The Dancer.” His futuristic “Space Family” sculptures are a nod to his fascination with space travel and space technology while his interest in wildlife can be seen in his “Flamingo”, “Deer” and “Gazelle” sculptures.

Gallery
Halvani’s gallery sits on the edge of the Artist Quarter near the Khan of the White Donkey. Halvani has served as the president of the Safed Art Colony Association and assisted in the development of the Museum Gallery of the Safed Artists' Colony.
The Beit Yosef network of Safed guesthouses is a unique concept in Tzfat lodgings, providing a wide variety of guesthouse options in out-of-the-way corners of Tzfat’s Old City and Artist Quarter.

Concept
Beit Yosef’s owners built their network of guesthouses with the idea that, by offering a variety of sizes and accommodation options, travelers would be able to find the unit that best fit their particular circumstances. Beit Yosef offers small hideaways, units that provide comfortable lodgings for multi-generational families and options for several families to vacation together. This B&B network is named after the Bet Yosef and Rabbi Yosef Karo in attempt to latch on to their association with Tzfat.

Units
Each Beit Yosef unit is unique. The renovated Old Jewish Quarter or Artists Quarter buildings have been fully rebuilt and are decorated in a manner that enhances their old Tzfat styles. Some units include extra beds for children while others provide double rooms for families or couples who are traveling together. Beit Yosef offers several units which are next to each other, increasing the available opportunities for families or friends who wish to travel together.

Amenities
Each Beit Yosef unit features a kitchenette which gives guests the option of preparing or warming food. All units have refrigerators. The units have all Shabbat amenities for Sabbath-observant guests including hot plates, hot water urns and dining areas which allow guests to sit down and enjoy their Sabbath meals right in the guestroom. The guestrooms are actually old renovated homes so families with children will find plenty of space for children to run and play.

Surrounding Space
Each Beit Yosef guesthouse has an adjacent porch or garden for guests who want to sit outside. The guesthouse staff ensures that all religious requirements are met, including individual succas for each guesthouse during the holiday of Succot.

Meals
Beit Yosef has an arrangement with the nearby Rimonim Hotel where guests can book breakfasts and other meals at a significant discount. Guests should note that they will want this arrangement when they make their reservation. Beit Yosef also offers use of a large dining hall for events and large groups.

The Tzfat Hesder Yeshivah offers advanced Talmudic studies to young men who wish to combine their religious studies with their mandated army service. Students are able to concentrate on their Torah studies and complete their army service in the type of religious framework that meets their idealism and values.

Hesder Framework
The Hesder yeshiva framework was conceived in 1953 and has grown throughout the years. The Hesder yeshiva was created to offer an opportunity for young Jewish men to combine their yeshiva studies with their army service. Israeli law requires all 18-year-olds to perform army service. The Hesder system was developed an an answer to the concerns of religious leaders, families and young men who were idealistically committed to army service but wanted to grow in their religious lifestyle during their service.

Young men who sign up for a Hesder Yeshivah commit to a five-year program whereby they study for a year and a half, serve in a combat unit for another year and a half and then return to the yeshiva study hall for the remainder of their service. Graduates of the Hesder yeshivas complete the five year commitment with a teacher’s certificate. There are over a dozen Hesder yeshivas throughout Israel.

Tzfat Yeshivat Hesder
The Hesder Yeshiva of Tzfat was opened in 1989 by Rabbi Benyahu Bruner. He wanted to strengthen the National Religious presence in Tzfat with young men, women (who were invited to register for a partner seminary) and staff members who could infuse the city with a Religious Zionist presence. The yeshiva has grown throughout the years as increasing numbers of young men are drawn to the idea of studying in Northern Israel while imbuing the spiritual atmosphere of Tzfat.

Garin
The Hesder yeshiva was a project of a “Garin” -- nucleus -- of young National Religious families who came to Tzfat to encourage the development of a strong and knowledgeable National Religious community in the city. Families who were involved in the garin integrated into the existing National Religious framework while developing the Hesder yeshivah and a sister institution, the Tzofnat Midrasha, for young women. Through the years this garin has grown and there are now over 100 families, living throughout Tzfat, who are connected to the garin.

Studies
In addition to studying the Talmud and other commentaries which are common in all yeshivas, the Hesder Yeshiva of Tzfat includes studies in the Tanya, the basic text of the Chabad Hassidim, Breslev Hassidic philosophies, the Maharal and the Kuzari, a book of mysticism. Rabbi Ayal Yakobovitch is the “Rosh Yeshivah” -- head of the yeshivah. The yeshivah operates under the spiritual guidance of Rav Shmuel Eliyahu, Tzfat’s Chief Rabbi.

Community Involvement
Hesder students in Tzfat are expected to involve themselves in the community. Many students volunteer in various forms of community service including within the school system, with Ethiopian immigrants and in social service projects. The yeshiva opens its doors to the community for Sabbath and holiday prayers and conducts a lively “Kabbalat Shabbat” -- Welcoming the Sabbath -- service with singing and dancing in the Old City’s Kikar HaMeginim Square. The Hesder yeshivah hosts an annual evening of prayer and thanksgiving on Israel Independence Day for the yeshivah and opens this celebration to the community.

Location
The Tzfat Hesder yeshivah is located in the Old Jewish Quarter of Tzfat on Najara Street next to the Safed Candle Shop.
|header7 = Description:
|data8 = Wide range of programs for people of all ages who want to learn more about Judaism, Hassidic philosophy and kabbalah based in Tzfat, Israel.}}

The Ascent Institute is located on HaAri Street along the northwestern border of the Old City of Tzfat. It offers a wide range of classes, weekend seminars, discussions and other opportunities for Jewish people who want to explore their heritage and Tzfat based Kabalah. The Ascent hostel provides sleeping facilities for over 85 people.

History
Ascent’s founders are members of the Chabad Hassidic sect which engages in outreach to unaffiliated Jews and are part of the local Chabad community. The center opened in 1983 in a small Tzfat hotel. It offered classes and Shabbat hospitality to travelers. In 1990 the Institute bought a larger hotel on the edge of the Old Jewish Quarter and expanded activities to include an extensive hostel, a library and weekend seminars in English and Hebrew.

Options
Ascent’s mission is to increase the Jewish knowledge and identity of unaffiliated Jews. As a result the Ascent programs are open only to Jewish individuals.

Classes
Classes at Ascent take place on a daily basis and participants can choose from a variety of classes on Jewish theology, Hassidic thought, the Sabbath, Jewish holidays, Kabbalah, the Torah portion of the week, Jewish meditation, Ethics of the Fathers, current events and Israel politics, the Jewish view of science, women in Judaism and much more.

Seminars
Ascent runs weekend seminars throughout the year, alternating between Hebrew-speaking and English-speaking seminars. Many of the seminars are connected to various themes such as current Jewish holidays and other interesting concepts. Past seminars include The Mysticism of Love, The Full Moon -- The Way of Happiness, Tanya -- the Way to Tranquility, Chanukah -- Light your Soul, Kabbalistic Tu B’shevat Seder, Bringing Joy Into Our Lives, Jewish Nutrition and Finding your Soulmate. Seminars take place from Thursday evening through Saturday evening and include home hospitality with Tsfat families for Sabbath meals.

Hostel
The Ascent hostel sleeps 85 people. Hostel prices are kept low to enable individuals with limited budgets to make use of the hostel facilities. Ascent further reduces the price for guests who attend (free) classes at Ascent. The hostel rooms are dorm-style with up to eight people per room. They are clean and comfortable.

Special Events
Local residents come to celebrate holidays and special events at Ascent together with Ascent’s guests. A special seminar over the Lag B’Omer holiday includes classes, Hassidic storytelling and a trip to nearby Mt. Meron, site of the Lag B’Omer festivities. During the intermediate days of the Passover and Succot holidays, Ascent hosts lively evenings with music and refreshments. Over the summer vacation when many people come to Safed, Ascent offers tours of Tzfat, hikes in the nearby mountains and workshops with art and music.

Learning Activities
Russian Program
Ascent operates a daily brunch and learn program for elderly Russian immigrant men. The men meet each morning to learn Torah and Hassidic philosophy over a hearty breakfast.

Library
The Ascent Library is open to hostel guests and drop-in visitors. The library offers a wide range of Judaica along with a staff librarian-Rabbi who is on-hand to answer questions and engage visitors in discussions.

Name Codes
Visitors who want to have a taste of Jewish mysticism may ask the rabbi to explain their name according to the kabbalah. According to Jewish wisdom, a person’s Jewish name is the channel for the energies that come from the upper spiritual worlds. The name affects a person’s entire human essence. A person’s name, in conjunction with his birthdate, has an important impact on each Jewish person’s life. The staff rabbi at the Ascent library will help visitors decipher the significance of a name which can reveal how this impacts on the person’s personality and other aspects of his life.

The Artist Quarter neighborhood or Safed is near the Old City. Originally the Arab Quarter of the city it was taken over by the Jews after the War of Independence.

Historical Overview
The Crusaders established their rule twice in Tzfat, once in 1099 and again in 1240. During the second reign, Jews and Arabs resettled the area. Each established its own neighborhood on the mountain slope below the Citadel -- the Jews to the north and the Arabs to the south. The two communities maintained their separate neighborhoods until the Safed War of Independence in 1948 when the Arabs fled in the face of Jewish victory.

In keeping with the Abandoned Areas Ordinance of 1948, the abandoned neighborhood came under the auspices of the Israeli Lands Authority Administration which sold properties to new immigrants arriving from Europe and North Africa. In addition, many artists, including some of Israel’s most celebrated artists, acquired properties and established their galleries in the quarter.

An Artists Quarter Association was created and well-known Israeli artists including David Gilboa, Moshe Kastel, Menachem Shemy, Moshe Raviv, Mordehai Levanon, Itzhak Frenkel, Ziona Tagar and Shimshon Holtzman set up a thriving Artists community which attracted tourists and art-lovers from around the world. The Artists Quarter became Israel’s “Bohemian Quarter” and its nightclubs attracted Israelis who drove to Tzfat from Tel Aviv to enjoy the ambiance.

Winds of Change
By the 1980s, the older artists were no longer opening their galleries, their children were not interested in maintaining the properties and young Israeli artists preferred to remain in the Tel Aviv/Jerusalem area. At the same time, new immigrants were arriving from English-speaking countries and were interested in buying and renovating the homes in the quaint old section of the town.

Slowly, the Artists Quarter took on a more religious, family character. Some of these new families also included artists however and they were interested in establishing art studios to showcase their own art.

The Artists Quarter Neighborhood
The Artists Quarter neighborhood today is a mixed neighborhood. There are still many artists who live, work and exhibit in the quarter, though most of the galleries are concentrated in and around the General Exhibition Hall of the Artists Quarter. Some young families have opened galleries next to their homes and their children play while their parents create their art and exhibit their works.

Religious Influences
Many of the new artists are observant Jews and they infuse their artwork with religious expression. In addition, several of the artists study Kabbalah and they incorporate Kabbalistic symbolism in their art. Some of these artists encourage groups of tourists to visit their galleries and hear lectures about Kabbalah and its connection to their art.

Real Estate
The demand for housing in the Artists Quarter continues to grow yearly. Together with the Old Jewish Quarter, its real estate is some of the highest-priced in northern Israel. Many residents and developers are building and adding additions onto existing homes and any empty plots are being developed.
There are no problems with “tabu” properties in the Artists Quarter, as there are in the [[Old City Safed|
Old Jewish Quarter]]. Land deeds in the Artist Quarter date no further back than 1948 and real estate purchases are straightforward.
|header7 = Description:

One of the most popular galleries for visitors who come to the Old City of Tzfas is the Safed Candle Shop. The shop displays a wide variety of candles which are used for Jewish ritual purposes, along with wax sculptures of Biblical characters and and other Judaica themes.

Safed Candles
A local businessman established the Safed Candles shop in 1991 in a small complex next to the Ari Ashkanazi synagogue. The candles were produced in a small workroom and displayed in the adjacent shop area.

Types of Candles
The Safed Candles displays candles which are used for a variety of Jewish ritual purposes, including Sabbath candles, Hanukah candles and braided candles for “havdallah” -- the end-of-Sabbath ceremony. The candles come in all different sizes, colors and shapes. At one time the havdallah candles were hand-braided at the Safed Candles shop where visitors could see the process. In addition, the shop periodically sponsored candle-making workshops. These options are no longer available.

Special Candles
In addition to the regular candles, the shop also sells candles that display Jewish themes, including Hassidic figurines, Jewish stars, and other Jewish ritual and holiday symbols. There are also candles of flowers, plants and animal images.

Sculptures
The shop displays intricately-sculpted wax sculptures, created by American immigrant Moshe-Chaim Gress. Moshe-Chaim works out of his home, in Tzfat’s Artist Quarter, and displays his artwork at the Candle Shop. The sculptures feature Biblical and other Jewish themes such as Noah’s Ark (along with dozens of animal candles), a soldier praying at the Western Wall, a chess set of Jewish figures, a model of the Temple, young David holding Goliath’s severed head and others. The sculptures are a main viewing attraction at the shop and Moshe Chaim adds new sculptures ever few months.

Fire
In 2008 a massive fire gutted the entire shop. During the ensuing renovations, the construction workers discovered several small rooms which had existed at street level in Tzfat many centuries ago. These rooms had been covered over during Tzfat’s 1759 and 1837 earthquakes which triggered landslides that buried the city. The renovations incorporated these ancient rooms into the new shop design.

Candle Production
Today the non-sculptured candles are produced in a factory in the southern industrial zone of Tzfat. The candles are still made from beeswax and the havdallah candles continue to be hand-woven.

The Ron Hotel is located on the slopes of the Citadel of Tzfat. Ron Hotel offers the types of amenities that Jewish Orthodox travelers look for when traveling, and is frequently used by religious groups visiting Safed. Along with a breathtaking view, the Ron Hotel is in close proximity to the Old City of Tzfat.

Location
The Ron hotel is located on the Metzuda of Safed. Tzfat’s “Metzuda” -- Citadel -- is the highest point of the city. It sits in the city’s center, surrounded by the main commercial street, Jerusalem Street. Under Jerusalem Street lays the Old City of Safed, including the Old City and the Artists Quarter. Further beyond the Old City are the newer post-1948 neighborhoods of Tzfat.

The Metzuda is known for its Crusader-era fortress which once commanded a view of Israel’s entire northern region. Today, after decades of earthquakes and neglect, the fortress is almost entirely buried underground, but the Metzuda Park walking trails provide an opportunity to enjoy the same expansive view.

Rooms
The Ron Hotel sits on the northern edge of the Metzuda, a two-minute walk from the Old Jewish Quarter. The 50 rooms in the hotel are simple, clean and pleasant. Many of the rooms offer a view of the Old City as well as the Meron mountain range which spreads out on the other side of the valley below Safed, Nahal Amud. Guests may select a room with two twin beds or, for a family, a larger room with extra beds.

Conference Rooms
Ron Hotel contains three conference / seminar rooms. Two of the rooms can hold up to 100 people and a smaller third room up to 40 people. While these rooms are occasionally used for dinners and family gatherings they are mostly used for the Seminary and Yeshiva groups that frequent the Ron Hotel.

Catering to Religious Guests
The Ron Hotel caters to religiously-observant Jewish guests. The Ron Hotel is Sabbath observant and maintains hotel services on the Sabbath in accordance with “Halacha” -- Jewish Law. Food served at the hotel is “Mehadrin Kosher” -- a high standard of kashruth. The pool, in accordance with Jewish traditions relating to modesty, maintains separate swimming hours for men and women. The Ron Hotel has an on-site synagogue which is open during all prayer-times.

Restaurant
The Ron Hotel’s restaurant serves kosher “mehadrin” meals. Guests at the hotel who stay over the Sabbath or Jewish holidays can order lunches and dinners ahead of time and enjoy the hotel’s Ashkanazi cuisine. The Ron’s restaurant also accepts meal bookings from other non-hotel guests who wish to eat Sabbath or holiday meals in the hotel. In all cases, guests must reserve and pay for their meals before the commencement of the Sabbath or the holiday, as the hotel does not accept payment on the day itself.
